F/V Pacific Prince
Patrick McGrorty
Born in Helena, Montana, Patrick has embarked on a fishing career that has spanned over four decades, beginning in 1983. Raised in Helena’s 11th Ward, one of Montana’s most impoverished neighborhoods, he never imagined a life at sea, but it would become his passion and profession. His fishing career includes working in various fisheries. He has fished extensively throughout the Aleutian Chain, harvesting Pollock, Atka Mackerel, Cod, Brown Crab, and Rockfish.
Over the years, Patrick has held multiple positions on board, starting as a deckhand/cook, rising to deck boss, engineer, and finally achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a captain. He credits much of his success to his education at the Newfoundland Marine Institute. He has worked alongside some of the best in the industry, learning from their knowledge and experience, which instilled in him a strong work ethic, intelligence, and leadership skills.
Patrick’s goal was always to return to school to get a
degree, but his career at sea has been so fulfilling that he has no regrets.
Now, having realized his dream of captaining his own rig, his focus has shifted
to giving back to the industry. He is passionate about mentoring the next
generation of fishermen, teaching them the importance of hard work and safety
in an inherently dangerous profession. Beyond his life at sea, Patrick has a
wide range of interests and hobbies. He was one of the original Mt. Baker
Hardcore snowboarders, starting in 1984, and is an avid golfer, racquetball,
basketball, and football player. He also enjoys whitewater rafting, having
conquered most rivers in the Northwest and Montana.
